The CH25 Armchair, designed by the iconic Hans J. Wegner, first came to life in 1950 and was considered revolutionary at the time. Its clean, simple lines and distinctive silhouette made it an instant classic in the world of mid-century modern design. Wegner’s vision blended form and function seamlessly, creating a chair that remains timeless more than seven decades later.
Innovation in Material and Craftsmanship
At the heart of the CH25’s appeal lies its woven paper cord seat and backrest — a material originally developed as a substitute for seagrass during World War II. It had never been used in furniture before, yet its strength, durability, and non-stretching quality proved exceptional. Each chair requires a skilled craftsman around ten hours and roughly 400 metres of paper cord to complete, using a weaving technique that showcases expert craftsmanship on both sides of the low reclining backrest.
